water-lily

Aquatic flowering plant

A water-lily is an aquatic plant with large flat leaves that float on the surface of ponds and slow-moving water, producing showy flowers in white, pink, yellow, or blue.

The leaves, called lily pads, are a familiar image of tranquil water: Frogs sat on the water-lilies.

Also spelled water lily.
