videodisks
Shiny movie carriers
Videodisks are optical discs that store video content for playback on a television or monitor.
The term covers several formats that emerged before DVDs, most notably laserdiscs, which offered superior picture quality to VHS tapes but never achieved mainstream adoption.
The word now sounds dated, as DVD and Blu-ray have become standard terminology.
Also spelled videodiscs.
