junior varsity
Underclassmen team level
Junior varsity refers to an athletic team composed of less experienced players, typically younger students who aren't yet ready for the top competitive level.
In American high schools and colleges, junior varsity (often shortened to JV) serves as a developmental tier below varsity: She played JV basketball as a freshman before making varsity.
The term sometimes extends figuratively to anything secondary or not quite first-string.
