Earned the sweater
A letterman is a student athlete who has earned a varsity letter—a fabric initial of the school's name awarded for athletic achievement.
The term extends to anyone who wears a letterman jacket, the wool-and-leather garment with the school letter sewn on: He was a letterman in three sports. (Capitalized Letterman refers to the television host.)
