varietals

Wine grape kinds

Varietals are wines made primarily from a single grape variety and named for that grape: a Chardonnay, a Merlot, a Cabernet Sauvignon.

The term distinguishes these from blends or wines named for their region.

In casual use, varietal sometimes refers to the grape varieties themselves rather than the wines: The vineyard grows several varietals.
