valley fever
Southwestern fungal infection
Valley fever is a fungal infection caused by inhaling spores from soil in arid regions of the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central and South America.
The illness ranges from mild flu-like symptoms to severe pneumonia.
Most cases resolve without treatment, but the infection can spread beyond the lungs and become serious, especially in immunocompromised people.
Also called coccidioidomycosis.
