histoplasmosis
Spelunker's lung infection
Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection caused by inhaling spores found in soil contaminated with bird or bat droppings.
Common in the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys, it often produces no symptoms or mild flu-like illness, but can become severe in people with weakened immune systems: The cave explorers were tested for histoplasmosis after their trip.
