premium gas
Higher-octane automotive fuel
Premium gas is gasoline with a higher octane rating than regular, typically 91-93 octane in the United States.
Higher octane resists premature combustion (engine knock) in high-performance or turbocharged engines.
Some vehicles require premium; for most others, it offers no benefit despite costing more: My car runs fine on regular—I'm not paying extra for premium.
