MTBE
Gasoline octane booster
MTBE is methyl tertiary-butyl ether, a chemical compound once widely added to gasoline to reduce air pollution from vehicle exhaust.
It fell out of favor after contaminating groundwater supplies, as it dissolves readily in water and resists breakdown.
Most U.S. states have banned or restricted its use since the early 2000s.
