turnstone

Rock-flipping wader bird

A turnstone is a small shorebird that feeds by flipping over stones, shells, and seaweed to find invertebrates hidden beneath.

Two species exist: the ruddy turnstone, with striking orange-and-black breeding plumage, and the black turnstone of the Pacific coast.

Turnstones worked the rocky beach, methodically overturning debris.
