energy conservation
Physics' bookkeeping law
Energy conservation has two distinct meanings.
In physics, it's the principle that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another—the total energy in a closed system remains constant.
In everyday use, it means reducing energy consumption through efficiency or restraint: The city launched an energy conservation campaign to cut electricity use during peak hours.
