turbofans
Bypass jet engines
Turbofans are jet engines that use a large fan to move air around the core, producing thrust more efficiently and quietly than older turbojet designs.
Nearly all commercial airliners use turbofan engines: The 747's turbofans roared as we lifted off.
The term also refers to the fans themselves within such engines.
