trompe-l'oeil

Fool-the-eye art

Trompe-l'oeil is a style of painting designed to create the illusion of three-dimensional reality—a technique so realistic that viewers are momentarily fooled.

The French term means "deceives the eye." Classical examples include painted architectural details that appear real, or a still life so convincing you might reach for the fruit.

The term extends to any artistic illusion meant to trick perception: The mural was pure trompe-l'oeil—I thought there was actually a window there.
