cast shadow
Obstruct light's path
A cast shadow is the dark area created when an object blocks light from reaching a surface.
Distinguished from the shadow on the object itself (the form shadow), a cast shadow falls onto nearby surfaces and reveals both the shape of the object and the direction of the light source.
The term is fundamental in drawing, painting, and 3D rendering: The cast shadow anchored the floating sphere to the ground.
