Holbein

Henry VIII's painter

Holbein refers to two German Renaissance painters, father and son, both named Hans.

Hans Holbein the Elder was known for religious works in the late Gothic style, but his son Hans Holbein the Younger achieved far greater fame as a portrait painter at the court of Henry VIII of England.

The younger Holbein's meticulous, psychologically penetrating portraits of Tudor-era figures remain iconic images of the period.

The museum's Holbein portraits draw visitors from around the world.
