tranche

One financial segment

A tranche is a portion or slice of something larger, especially in finance where it refers to a segment of a debt or investment that has been divided into parts with different risk levels, interest rates, or maturity dates.

The bank sold the riskiest tranche of mortgage-backed securities to hedge funds.

From French for "slice," the term appears most often in discussions of structured financial products, loans, or funding released in stages.

The next tranche of aid will be released once conditions are met.
