legger

Canal boat pusher

A legger is a person who propelled canal boats through tunnels by lying on their back and "walking" along the tunnel ceiling or walls—a grueling occupation from the era before motorized barges.

The term survives mainly in British canal history.

Separately, legger can mean a leg hit in cricket, or informally, anything notably fast or having prominent legs.
