tinsmithing

Shaping tin sheets

Tinsmithing is the craft of shaping and working tin and other light metals into useful objects—pots, pans, lanterns, roofing, decorative items.

The tinsmith cuts, bends, solders, and hammers sheet metal.

The trade was essential before mass manufacturing but now survives mainly in restoration work and artisan crafts: She took up tinsmithing to make period-accurate colonial lanterns.
