flanging

Sweeping audio effect

Flanging is an audio effect that creates a sweeping, jet-like sound by mixing a signal with a slightly delayed copy of itself, with the delay time continuously varying.

The technique originated when engineers pressed against tape reels to slow them—the flange being the metal rim of the reel.

The guitar solo has heavy flanging on it.

In metalworking, flanging is the process of forming a projecting rim or edge on a piece of metal.
