standing wave
Fixed nodal pattern
A standing wave is a wave pattern that appears stationary, formed when waves of equal frequency travel in opposite directions and interfere with each other.
The wave oscillates in place rather than propagating, with fixed points called nodes where no movement occurs and antinodes where amplitude is greatest.
Standing waves occur in vibrating strings, organ pipes, and microwave ovens: The guitar string vibrates as a standing wave between the nut and bridge.
