tidal bores
Upstream-rushing waves
A tidal bore is a wave that travels up a river or narrow bay when an incoming tide meets the outgoing current.
The collision of opposing forces creates a wave front that can range from a gentle ripple to a dramatic wall of water several feet high.
Famous bores occur on the Amazon, the Severn in England, and China's Qiantang River.
Surfers sometimes ride tidal bores for miles upstream.
