rip currents
Ocean's dangerous channels
Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of water flowing away from shore, formed when waves break and water rushes back to sea through gaps in sandbars or near structures like piers.
They can pull even strong swimmers out quickly.
The safety advice is not to fight the current but to swim parallel to shore until free of its pull: Signs warned of dangerous rip currents.
