third-world
Non-aligned, less industrialized
Third-world originated during the Cold War to describe nations aligned with neither the Western bloc (first world) nor the Soviet bloc (second world), but it quickly came to designate economically underdeveloped countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
Today the term is often considered outdated or offensive, as it implies inferiority; alternatives like "developing nations" or "Global South" are preferred in formal contexts.
It persists as an adjective suggesting poverty, inadequate infrastructure, or lack of modern amenities: The hospital conditions were practically third-world.
