tesseract

Cube's higher analogue

A tesseract is a four-dimensional analog of a cube—a hypercube.

Just as a cube is bounded by six square faces, a tesseract is bounded by eight cubic cells.

The concept exists in mathematics and geometry, though it can only be represented in three dimensions as a projection or unfolded net.

The term gained wider recognition through Madeleine L'Engle's novel *A Wrinkle in Time*, where it describes a method of folding space-time for interstellar travel.
