spatial dimension
Measurable physical direction
A spatial dimension is a direction in which physical objects can extend or move.
Everyday experience involves three spatial dimensions—length, width, and height—allowing objects to have volume and position.
In physics and mathematics, additional spatial dimensions are sometimes theorized or modeled: String theory proposes extra spatial dimensions we cannot perceive.
Dimension alone often implies spatial dimension when context makes clear we're discussing physical space rather than time or abstract parameters.
- lengthMeasure of extent
- widthDistance across something
- heightVertical extent upward
- depthDistance below surface
- volumeAmount of space filled
