minicomputer

Mid-sized computing machine

A minicomputer is a class of computer smaller and less powerful than a mainframe but larger than a personal computer.

The term emerged in the 1960s when such machines filled a room rather than a building.

By the 1980s, minicomputers were largely displaced by workstations and servers, making the term mostly historical: The company's old minicomputer still runs their inventory system.
