layby

Highway rest spot

A layby is a paved area beside a road where vehicles can pull off to stop—for rest, emergencies, or to let faster traffic pass.

The term is primarily British; Americans say pull-off or rest area.

In British and Australian English, layby also means a system of reserving goods with a deposit and paying in installments before taking possession—what Americans call layaway.
