surfzone

Where waves break

The surfzone is the nearshore area where waves break, extending from the shoreline out to where incoming swells first begin to crest and collapse.

It's the turbulent strip of water where surfers ride waves and swimmers get tumbled.

Also spelled as two words: surf zone.
