sureties

Promises backing loans

Sureties are guarantees or pledges of security, or the people who provide them.

In legal contexts, a surety is someone who takes responsibility for another's debt or obligation—if the original party defaults, the surety must pay: The court required two sureties for his bail.

More broadly, surety means certainty or assurance: I can say with surety that she'll be there.
