subvocalization

Inner speech while reading

Subvocalization is the silent internal speech that occurs when reading or thinking—the "voice in your head" that pronounces words without actually speaking them aloud.

Most readers subvocalize automatically, and while speed-reading techniques often aim to suppress it, research suggests it aids comprehension and memory.

The term also applies to barely audible muttering or lip movements during reading.

I catch myself subvocalizing when I read difficult passages.
