stream-of-consciousness

Mind's unedited flow

Stream-of-consciousness is a narrative technique that presents thoughts as they flow through the mind—unfiltered, associative, often without conventional grammar or logical sequence.

The term comes from psychology but is most associated with modernist literature: Joyce, Woolf, Faulkner.

The novel's stream-of-consciousness passages can be disorienting at first.

More loosely, any rambling, unstructured monologue: Sorry, that was a bit stream-of-consciousness.
