subvocalize

Read without speaking

Subvocalize means to pronounce words silently, moving the lips or tongue without producing audible sound, or simply forming the words mentally.

Most people subvocalize when reading, essentially "hearing" the text in their inner voice.

Speed-reading techniques often aim to reduce subvocalization on the theory that it slows comprehension.

I caught myself subvocalizing the dialogue as I read the novel.
