string beans

Long green vegetables

String beans are green beans—the long, slender pods of certain bean plants eaten whole as a vegetable.

The name comes from the fibrous "string" that once ran along the pod's seam, though modern varieties have largely been bred to eliminate it.

We're having string beans with dinner.

The term is more common in American English than British.
