stoup

Church water vessel

A stoup is a basin for holy water, typically set into the wall or mounted on a pillar near the entrance of a church.

Worshippers dip their fingers in the stoup to make the sign of the cross upon entering.

The word also refers to any small basin or drinking vessel, though this sense is archaic: a stoup of ale.
