stoops

Small entrance platforms

Stoops are small porches or sets of steps at the entrance to a building, especially in urban rowhouses and brownstones.

The word is most common in the northeastern United States, where stoop culture—sitting outside on summer evenings, chatting with neighbors—remains a fixture of city life: Kids played on the stoop while their parents talked.

To stoop is also to bend forward at the waist, and by extension, to lower oneself morally: I won't stoop to their level.
