stone circle

Neolithic ritual monument

A stone circle is a prehistoric monument consisting of standing stones arranged in a rough circle or oval.

Found primarily in Britain and Ireland, these Neolithic and Bronze Age structures likely served ceremonial, astronomical, or burial purposes.

Stonehenge is the most famous example, though hundreds of smaller circles dot the British landscape: We hiked to the stone circle on the moor.
