henge

Prehistoric British ring

A henge is a prehistoric circular earthwork consisting of a ring-shaped bank with an internal ditch, typically enclosing a ritual or ceremonial space.

The term comes from Stonehenge, though Stonehenge itself is atypical—its famous standing stones are a separate feature from the earthwork.

Henges are found primarily in Britain and Ireland: The area contains several Bronze Age henges.
