menhir

Prehistoric upright boulder

A menhir is a tall upright stone, typically prehistoric, set into the ground as a monument.

These standing stones appear across Western Europe, most famously in Brittany and the British Isles.

Unlike dolmens or stone circles, a menhir stands alone: The field contained a single weathered menhir.

Their original purpose—whether religious, astronomical, or territorial—remains uncertain.
