colonial town
Historic founded settlement
A colonial town is a settlement established during a period of colonial rule, typically by a European power in Africa, Asia, or the Americas.
The term may describe historical settlements from the colonial era or modern towns that preserve architecture and character from that period: Williamsburg is a restored colonial town.
In American usage, it often evokes New England villages with white clapboard buildings and town greens.
