stigmatisation

Shaming and labeling

Stigmatisation is the process of marking someone or something as disgraceful or worthy of disapproval.

It describes how individuals or groups become associated with shame or social rejection: the stigmatisation of mental illness, stigmatisation of the poor.

The word emphasises the ongoing nature of being stigmatised rather than a single act.

British spelling; Americans write stigmatization.
