Van de Graaff
Dome charges hair
Van de Graaff refers to a type of electrostatic generator that accumulates high voltages on a hollow metal sphere, named after American physicist Robert Van de Graaff.
The device uses a moving belt to transfer electric charge to the dome, where it builds up.
Van de Graaff generators are staples of physics classrooms, famous for making hair stand on end: The teacher touched the Van de Graaff and her hair flew out in all directions.
