staging post

Rest along route

A staging post is a stopping point on a longer journey, originally a place where travelers could rest and change horses.

The term now applies more broadly to any intermediate point in a process or progression: The internship was a staging post on her way to a full partnership.

Chiefly British; Americans more often say way station or stopover.
