forward operating base
Tactical staging area
A forward operating base is a military installation positioned near active operations to support tactical missions.
Usually abbreviated FOB, it provides supplies, communications, and staging areas closer to combat zones than permanent bases.
The term gained wide use during U.S. operations in Iraq and Afghanistan: We ran patrols out of the FOB for six months.
