sprouts
Young green shoots
Sprouts are young plant growths that have just emerged from seeds or older plant parts.
Brussels sprouts, often shortened to just sprouts, are the small cabbage-like vegetables that grow along a thick stalk.
Bean sprouts, commonly used in Asian cooking, are the tender shoots of germinated mung beans or soybeans.
As a verb, sprout means to begin growing or to send out new growth: The potatoes sprouted in the pantry.
Figuratively, things that appear suddenly or proliferate can be said to sprout: New coffee shops sprouted up all over the neighborhood.
