somite

Embryonic body block

A somite is one of the paired blocks of tissue that form along the developing spine in vertebrate embryos.

These segments give rise to the vertebrae, ribs, skeletal muscles, and dermis.

The term appears mainly in embryology and developmental biology: The human embryo develops about 42 somites during the first few weeks of gestation.
