slack-water

Current's brief rest

Slack-water is the brief period when tidal currents stop flowing—the pause between ebb and flood tides when the water is nearly still.

Sailors and fishermen time their movements around slack-water because navigation is easier without strong currents: We'll cross the bar at slack-water.

The term also describes the still water above a dam or in a sheltered inlet.
