sky lanterns
Airborne paper luminaries
Sky lanterns are small hot-air balloons made of paper stretched over a light frame, with a candle or fuel cell at the opening.
When lit, the flame heats the air inside, causing the lantern to rise and drift.
They're released at festivals and celebrations, particularly in East Asian traditions: Hundreds of sky lanterns floated over the night market.
Also called Chinese lanterns or wish lanterns.
