contrails

Airplane vapor trails

Contrails are the white streaks that form behind aircraft at high altitudes, created when hot exhaust meets cold air and water vapor condenses into ice crystals.

Short for condensation trails.

They dissipate quickly or linger depending on atmospheric conditions: The sky was crisscrossed with contrails.
