Cloud formations are the visible patterns and arrangements clouds take in the sky.
Meteorologists classify them by altitude and shape—cumulus (puffy), stratus (layered), cirrus (wispy)—and their combinations.
Beyond technical classification, the term often refers to dramatic or unusual cloud arrangements: We stopped to photograph the cloud formations at sunset.
