floating lanterns
Airborne glowing vessels
Floating lanterns are paper lanterns with an opening at the bottom where a small flame heats the air inside, causing the lantern to rise and drift.
They're released en masse at festivals and celebrations, particularly in East Asian traditions: Thousands of floating lanterns lit up the night sky.
Also called sky lanterns or Chinese lanterns.
The term can also refer to paper lanterns that float on water rather than air.
